Mayor Purzycki’s Farewell St. Patrick’s Day Parade: A Celebration of Irish Culture in Downtown Wilmington
March 9, 2024
Mayor Mike Purzycki, alongside residents, community leaders, and elected officials, marked his final St. Patrick’s Day Parade as Mayor, marching through the streets of Wilmington on Saturday, March 9th. The parade, organized by the Irish Culture Club of Delaware, now in its 47th year, followed King Street, culminating in the vibrant Hooley celebration.
Led by Grand Marshals Joe and Gerry McCoy, and representatives of the O.N.E. Irish Veterans Organization, the parade honored the rich heritage of Irish Americans in Wilmington. Mayor Purzycki, previously honored as Grand Marshal in 2019, joined the procession alongside Police Chief Wilfredo Campos, Fire Chief John Looney, ICCD club members, and O.N.E. veterans on King Street, as March is “Irish American Heritage Month” in Wilmington.
The lively parade, featuring floats, marching bands, dancers, and more, commenced at 4th and King Streets, winding its way past the Parade Grandstand at Rodney Square, before concluding near 14th Street where the post-Parade Hooley festivities awaited.
Mayor Purzycki expressed his appreciation for the enduring tradition, highlighting the significant contributions of the Irish community to the city’s cultural tapestry.
“As we bid farewell to another memorable St. Patrick’s Day Parade, we celebrate the enduring ties that bind us to our Irish heritage,” Mayor Purzycki remarked. “This event embodies the spirit of our city—a fusion of tradition, community, and vibrant celebration. I extend a warm invitation to all to explore our Downtown district, savoring the rich offerings of our local restaurants and attractions, and experience the heartbeat of Wilmington.”
