Wilmington Fire Department Welcomes 15 New Firefighters with Ceremony Full of Pride and Promise

In a momentous ceremony, the Wilmington Fire Department welcomed 15 new firefighters, marking the graduation of the 43rd Recruit Class. Held at Salesianum School, the event celebrated the culmination of a challenging 13-week academy that tested the recruits both physically and mentally. With certifications as Firefighter 1 and 2, as well as Emergency Medical Technicians, these dedicated individuals are now poised to serve their community.

Chief of Fire John Looney inspired the new graduates, urging them to honor the legacy of the department and commit to daily improvement. Class President Xavier Gadson echoed this sentiment, reminding his fellow recruits to live by the department’s mantra: “Dedication and Valor.” The ceremony also recognized outstanding achievements, including awards for physical fitness, academic excellence, leadership, and perseverance. The new firefighters now embark on a year-long probationary period, rotating through various stations as they prepare for their permanent assignments.
