WILMINGTON, DE — August 28, 2024 — The Buccini Pollin Group (BPG), a prominent Wilmington-based developer, marked a significant milestone today with the topping out of their latest residential venture, The Press. The 14-story, 243-unit apartment building, located at 801 N. Orange Street, is on track for completion by Summer 2025.
In a ceremony that has become a symbol of progress in the construction world, the final structural beam was hoisted to the top of the building, adorned with an American flag and an evergreen tree—a nod to longstanding tradition. Local dignitaries, including Mayor Mike Purzycki and BPG executives, gathered alongside project partners and neighbors, all of whom were invited to sign the beam before it was raised. The occasion underscores the collaborative effort that has gone into realizing this ambitious project.
The Press, designed by the esteemed architectural firm Perkins Eastman, represents a $90 million investment in the heart of Wilmington. The development spans 1.15 acres and will offer a mix of studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, including duplexes. The high-rise tower, with its sleek glass and metal façade, will feature amenities such as an indoor lounge, a social dining space, and a rooftop deck offering panoramic views of Downtown Wilmington. Complementing the tower is a four-story residential building along 8th Street, which will include three-bedroom duplexes and additional apartments.
The site’s design thoughtfully integrates various communal spaces, including a private outdoor area with a pool, dog run, and grilling stations. A porte-cochère will offer a grand entrance to the residential lobby, while a pocket park, accessible to the public, will enhance the site’s appeal with seating and landscaping.
The Press’s name pays homage to the site’s history as the former headquarters of The News Journal, which vacated the location in 1989. The project aims to breathe new life into this once-bustling urban space, now slated to become home to more than 350 residents. Situated just two blocks from Market Street, the development offers easy access to local businesses, the Wilmington Train Station, and other neighborhood attractions.
BPG’s latest project is a continuation of their efforts to revitalize Wilmington’s residential landscape. The company has previously introduced notable developments such as The Residences at Mid-town Park and Crosby Hill, adding nearly 450 units to the city’s housing stock in recent years.
“Our city is experiencing unprecedented growth, with businesses and residents flocking to Wilmington,” said Mayor Mike Purzycki. “The Press not only contributes to this momentum but also honors the history of our downtown. I’m grateful to BPG for their ongoing investment in our community.”
With over 2,200 residential units already brought to market in Wilmington and another 700 in development, including The Standard and Humble Park, BPG continues to be a driving force in the city’s economic development.
“We are immensely proud to reach this milestone,” said Rob Buccini, Founder of the Buccini Pollin Group. “The Press is more than just a building—it’s a testament to the vision we’ve had for Wilmington for decades. This project will not only redefine our skyline but also enrich our community.”
BPG and BPGS Construction are overseeing the development and construction of The Press, with leasing and property management to be handled by ResideBPG, BPG’s residential affiliate. The project is expected to generate approximately 392 construction jobs in Wilmington.
