WILMINGTON—Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has announced the nomination of Dr. Thomas Sweeney and Gary Ferguson to the Diamond State Hospital Cost Review Board, aiming to strengthen the state’s healthcare oversight. The two distinguished leaders, with deep expertise in both clinical practice and healthcare administration, will now await confirmation by the Delaware State Senate.
“Dr. Sweeney and Mr. Ferguson are highly respected healthcare professionals in Delaware. Their combined expertise will be invaluable as we tackle the complex challenges of healthcare cost and accessibility,” Governor Meyer stated. “Delaware has access to some of the brightest minds in the country, and I’m confident that their contributions will benefit our state. I trust the Senate will confirm these outstanding nominees promptly.”
Dr. Sweeney is a retired emergency medicine physician whose career spans over three decades. Having led teams in clinical practice, medical education, and emergency medical services, Dr. Sweeney has earned recognition as a driving force for better healthcare systems in Delaware. He also serves as the medical director for the Institute for Physician Assistant Education at Widener University, training the next generation of healthcare professionals. His advocacy for accessible care is highlighted by his 15-year tenure as chair of Westside Family Healthcare’s board, where he worked to improve healthcare for underserved populations.
Gary Ferguson, a veteran of healthcare administration, brings more than 40 years of leadership experience to the table. Having held senior roles at ChristianaCare, including Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Ferguson helped guide the health system to national prominence. He has also contributed to public health planning initiatives across Delaware, having served as the Executive Director of the Delaware Academy of Medicine and led the Delaware Health Council. Now retired, Ferguson remains committed to the Delaware community, where he has lived for over 50 years.
Both nominations come at a time when Delaware faces growing concerns over healthcare costs and access. With extensive experience at the intersection of healthcare policy, system management, and public health, Sweeney and Ferguson are poised to offer valuable insight and leadership on the board.
