YMCA of Delaware Launches BrainSavers: A Holistic Approach to Healthy Aging
February 18, 2025
As the pursuit of lifelong wellness gains momentum, the YMCA of Delaware is introducing BrainSavers, a revolutionary program designed to support cognitive and physical health as individuals age. Developed by neurologist Dr. Paul Bendheim and backed by evidence-based research, BrainSavers is an instructor-led initiative aimed at helping participants maintain vitality, resilience, and independence.
A Comprehensive Wellness Program
Aging gracefully isn’t just about staying physically active—it’s about nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. BrainSavers integrates six key pillars of brain-body wellness:
- Social Engagement – Fostering meaningful connections to support emotional well-being.
- Cognitive Fitness – Stimulating brain function with targeted exercises.
- Physical Fitness – Enhancing mobility, strength, and cardiovascular health.
- Healthful Nutrition – Encouraging balanced diets that support brain and body health.
- Stress Management – Teaching techniques to reduce anxiety and enhance mindfulness.
- Quality Sleep – Emphasizing the importance of restorative rest for cognitive function.
Science-Backed Benefits
Dr. Bendheim, a board-certified neurologist and clinical professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, has dedicated his career to studying neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. His research underscores the importance of proactive lifestyle choices in maintaining cognitive function and reducing the risk of age-related decline.
Studies from the American Psychological Association reveal that even moderate physical activity can help preserve cognitive abilities in older adults. Those who remain active tend to perform better on memory, reasoning, vocabulary, and reaction-time tasks than their sedentary peers. This aligns with BrainSavers’ mission to provide a structured yet engaging program that incorporates these fundamental principles.
