Bluecoats Stage Remarkable Comeback in Regulation, Overcoming Spurs in Overtime

Wilmington, February 9, 2024 – The Delaware Blue Coats (11-5) stage one of the greatest comeback wins in franchise history, triumphing over the Austin Spurs (9-8) with a thrilling 125-123 victory on Wilmington Blue Bombers Tribute Night, sponsored by Wilmington Brew Works.
The Blue Coats found themselves trailing by 23 points as they entered halftime. However, they mounted an impressive comeback, outscoring Austin by 15 points in the third quarter and another eight in the fourth, ultimately knotting the score at 118 and pushing the game into overtime.

Notably, the NBA G League overtime rules implement the “Elam ending,” introducing a target score of seven points to determine the winner.
The Blue Coats emerged victorious in the first-to-seven race, reaching the target score and ending the game at 125 points. Jarron Cumberland sealed the win with a driving layup, securing the team’s third consecutive victory in dramatic fashion.
Head coach Mike Longabardi reflected on the game, stating, “The second half was really good, the first half not so good. I just told them, ‘we have to find different ways to win.’ Tonight was one of those ways.”

Darius Bazley showcased an impressive performance, tallying a career-high 36 points along with nine rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Jeff Dowtin Jr. made significant contributions with a game-high 11 assists and was second on the team with 26 points. Additionally, Marcus Bagley provided a valuable spark off the bench, contributing 16 points to the team’s victory.
Gray led the Spurs in scoring with 25 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Former Blue Coats guard David Duke Jr. made a notable return to Chase Fieldhouse, scoring 22 points, collecting 10 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Paul Watson contributed 18 points to the starting five, while Mamadi Diakite led all bench scorers in the game with 17 points.

At halftime of tonight’s game, the Blue Coats honored the legacy of Wilmington Blue Bombers legend Waite Bellamy by retiring his No. 9 jersey. Bellamy, a star in the Eastern Professional Basketball League from 1963-1971, left an indelible mark on the franchise.
The Blue Coats will have a quick turnaround as they host the Spurs at Chase Fieldhouse again on Saturday, Feb. 10, for the second leg of a back-to-back. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EST.
