Family Matters” Star Shares Behind-the-Scenes Stories, Career Highlights, and Personal Journey at Wilmington Library Event

WILMINGTON, DEL. — Jaleel White, the actor who famously portrayed Steve Urkel on the beloved sitcom Family Matters, captivated fans during a special appearance at the Wilmington Library. Moderated by Randell Law, founder of Kool Kolored Kid Generation, LLC, the event offered a rare glimpse into White’s life on and off the screen.
The conversation, titled Growing Up Urkel, explored White’s experiences as a child actor, his relationships with his castmates, and his career trajectory. White shared how playing Urkel—one of television’s most iconic characters—affected his life and voice. During puberty, embodying the high-pitched and quirky persona took a toll on his voice box, a sacrifice that contributed to the character’s lasting cultural impact.
White revealed that his path to stardom began early. A teacher once told his mother that he was special and should be in Hollywood. Coupled with the fact that he could read at just three years old, this recognition set him on a trajectory that led to over 50 national commercials for brands like Toys “R” Us, Oreos, and Pepsi. These early experiences shaped his ability to navigate the entertainment industry and prepared him for the role that would make him a household name.

On Family Matters, White’s talent shone as he played multiple characters, including Steve Urkel, Stefan Urquelle, Myrtle Mae Urkel, and Cornelius Eugene Urkel. His creativity extended beyond acting, as he also wrote two episodes of the show: Grandmama and Home Again. White reflected on the challenges and joys of portraying such a variety of roles and contributing to the show’s storytelling.
White also revealed that Family Matters was a grueling yet rewarding experience, with the cast shooting six episodes a week at its peak. Interestingly, America’s Funniest Home Videos once claimed that Urkel was the most submitted character in the show’s history, a testament to his widespread appeal.
White credited his mother for guiding his career, initially aiming for him to make just enough money to pay for college. Despite his burgeoning fame, White’s parents kept him grounded. Both Crenshaw High School sweethearts, they decided against private schooling for Jaleel, fostering a balance between fame and normalcy. He even played basketball during high school, though he humorously admitted to spending most of his time on the bench.
Beyond Family Matters, White’s versatility extended into voice acting as the original voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. Today, he continues to entertain audiences as the host of the CBS game show Flip Side.
The event wasn’t just about reminiscing. White engaged directly with fans, posing for photos and signing memorabilia. Even though copies of White’s memoir, Growing Up Urkel, were pre-signed, he took the time to autograph books for those in attendance, personally shaking hands and taking photos with fans to show his appreciation.

Attendees enjoyed a brunch to kick off the program, followed by the engaging conversation and a selfie opportunity with the star. White’s willingness to connect with fans on a personal level made the event particularly special, leaving attendees with memories to cherish.
With this event, the Wilmington Library delivered a unique experience for 90s TV fans, blending nostalgia with personal insight. As the library prepares for its holiday hiatus, this program leaves a lasting impression of its commitment to cultural enrichment.
White’s appearance not only celebrated his legacy but also offered an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs of growing up in the spotlight—a story that continues to resonate with fans across generations.
